.: Canadian Coins 101
If you are a beginning collector or if you would like to know more about the subject of Canadian coins and currency, then the Canadian Numismatic Association introductory home-study course, Canadian Coins 101, should be your first choice on how to learn to enjoy your collecting activities.
C.N.A. memberFred Freeman compiled Canadian Coins 101 to introduce the beginning collector and others to an established knowledge of coin collecting through a series of lessons, viewings of actual “collected” coins, and tests about what has been learned. The course developed from a program created by Mr. Freeman, a former educator, as an auxiliary teaching element for school students and to which he has added a wealth of educational material selected from writings by several numismatic experts. Fred started coin collecting in his youth, is active in the C.N.A., President of his local coin club and a “Fellow of the Ontario Numismatic Association”. His goal is to interest the younger generation in the fascinating world of coin collecting. He likes to think of himself as a “Coin Kids advocate”.
Canadian Coins 101 is designed for school students interested in learning the history of Canadian coins and the practical methods of developing coin knowledge while forming a collection. The course teachings are also appropriate for any collector who has a beginning interest in Canadian coins tokens and paper money. United States coins and other numismatic material and topics are touched on to round out the knowledge of the novice. The text is clearly written and easily followed and has occasional bits of amusing numismatic humour in keeping with Fred’s philosophy that coin collecting should be fun. This course can also be used as a minimum cost method to present coin information to those in remote communities.
Applicants receive the course binder with over 100 pages of related information, ample plastic insert-pages for storage of coins as they are added to the collection, an illustrated textbook Catalogue of Canadian Coins with grading prices, a coin collector's guidebook, a quantity of 2x2 coin holders for the insert pages, a magnet to detect steel coins, 25 genuine now out-of-circulation Canadian decimal coins including a few U.S. coins, all in nice collectable condition. The coins are for instructional learning and to keep as a start of your collection. There are several pages of short tests of knowledge to send for marking, envelopes for mailing and an email address for help. This course comes as a kit, and also contains a back issue of The CN Journal and other numismatic information of interest.
The course is available post paid to applicants in Canada on payment of $29.90 CDN$ and to applicants for course delivery post paid outside of Canada for $29.90 US$. The C.N.A and the Ontario Numismatic Association have generously subsidized the cost of this course in order to promote this hobby to newcomers. The C.N.A. and the O.N.A. appreciates the volunteer efforts of Fred Freeman for his work on this course.
