The Numismatic Educational Services Association
The Numismatic Educational Services Association (NESA) has been in existence for well over a decade, assisting in funding numismatic projects that have benefited collectors of Canadian coinage. The Canadian Federal Government has recognized NESA for its educational work by certifying it as a Registered Canadian Charitable Organization, authorized to issue income tax receipts for use by people filing Canadian tax returns. If you file Canadian income tax and wish to take advantage of a tax reduction due to your donation, you should make your donation payable to the Numismatic Educational Services Association, or simply NESA, and ask for a tax receipt when making the donation.
NESA has been funding educational projects instigated by the Canadian Numismatic Association and other non-profit organizations since its inception. Its terms of reference are very simple: to make funding available for educational programs that will benefit Canadian numismatics. The Executive Committee usually meets three times a year in conjunction with major numismatic shows. The annual meeting of the NESA Executive is held in conjunction with the annual convention of the Canadian Numismatic Association. Other meetings are usually scheduled in conjunction with the annual convention of the Ontario Numismatic Association and the Fall edition of the Torex Coin Show in Toronto, Ontario.
FUNDING OF PROGRAMS
NESA has funded a number of projects organized by the Canadian Numismatic Association. Some of the current programs made possible by donations from NESA are:
C.N.A. / N.E.S.A. Canadian Numismatic Correspondence Course Part I – The original creation and printing of the C.N.A. / N.E.S.A. Canadian Numismatic Correspondence Course as well as reprints, totalling over 1,300 copies, were funded by NESA. As well, NESA has consented to underwrite further reprints of the course as demand dictates.
50th Anniversary Book - Another project that was funded by NESA was the printing of the 148-page hard cover 50th Anniversary book entitled “A Half Century of Advancement in Numismatics,” edited by the CNA’s historian, Stan Clute. This book can be purchased from the C.N.A. at very attractive pricing. Order this book and other 50th Anniversary collectibles.
Educational Seminars - Seminars have also benefited from the assistance of NESA, underwriting the cost of the educational aspects such as the printing of hand-out educational literature and other expenses incurred by the instructors. The popular seminars held at Humber College in Toronto for a number of years have benefited from NESA’s involvement, since funding enabled the C.N.A. to charge participants a very reasonable price to offset non-funded costs. Want to attend the upcoming Humber College seminar?
C.N.A. / N.E.S.A. Canadian Numismatic Correspondence Course #2 – This new course consists of seventeen chapters, 486 pages and hundreds of photos and features all new material from what was in Part I. Each author was chosen for their numismatic expertise of the subject covered. The chapters offers greater detail and more in-depth coverage than the first course. Learn more about the course. Slide Programs – NESA has agreed to fund the cost of the creation and duplication of numismatic slide sets made available to the Audio Visual Lending Library so that it can be loaned to local coin clubs purely for the cost of postage. Payment equaling the cost of film, developing and duplicating of slides is made by NESA to the photographer and author once a set has been donated to the C.N.A. Slide on over to the list of sets.
Video Tape Programs – NESA is funding the acquisition of VHS tape programs for the C.N.A.’s Audio Visual Lending Library so that they can also be loaned to local coin clubs and individuals purely for the cost of postage. Here is our list of tape programs.
C.N.A. JUNIOR PROGRAMS – When educational material for Coin Kids Kits sent to all junior collectors joining the C.N.A. cannot be obtained by donations, NESA will fund the cost of its acquisition providing it is of an educational nature and deemed to be highly desirable to keep young peoples’ interest in numismatics. For example, numismatic literature that is geared to educate young people but cannot be obtained by donations would qualify. Check out the C.N.A. Coin Kids program.
CANADIAN COINS 101 – If you are a beginning collector, or if you would like to know all about the subject of Canadian coins and currency, then our C.N.A. introductory home-study coin course: Canadian Coins 101 is your best choice to help you in learning how to enjoy your collecting activities. Qualifications
To qualify for funding from NESA, projects must meet a strict guideline of being educational. It is as simple as: if a proposed project is not of educational benefit, it cannot be funded by donations made to NESA!
Making Tax Exempt Donations to NESA
Donations of $5.00 or more made by anyone filing Canadian income tax will receive a charitable donation tax receipt for Canadian income tax purposes for the year in which the donation is made. (Non-Canadians making donations should make their donation to the C.N.A. since they do not qualify for a tax receipt.)
All donations of $10 and over are acknowledged in The CN Journal unless the donor wishes to remain anonymous and advises us to this effect when sending in their donation.
Please do your part in helping us promote Canadian numismatics. Make a meaningful donation today.
